There are a lot of great Ken Patera stories, but one of our favorites is how a couple of guys walking into the gym one day saw Ken over at the squat rack piling plates on the bar--three wheels and a lot of change on each side. "Great," they said. "We're going to get to see Ken squat!" as he got under the bar. Then Ken did some presses behind the neck.
That's the thing about Ken Patera--he was so strong that even strong guys, and guys used to seeing strong guys, were amazed . . . whether he was ripping a parking meter out of the sidewalk, shrugging a York bar so violently that he bent it, or just pressing more than 500 lb. overhead, Ken Patera was S-T-R-O-N-G.
Ken Patera: if there's someone to write this story, it's Bruce Wilhelm, 1976 Olympian, two-time World's Strongest Man winner and MILO cover guy, who has known Ken for decades. 44 pp.
